He is living his last weeks. From January 1, 2023, the red stamp, which allows you to send a letter for the next day, will no longer be marketed. Indeed, La Poste is eliminating priority routing, known as “D + 1”, which is too expensive to maintain while mail volumes are collapsing.
However, it will survive in a partly dematerialized form: the “red e-letter”. This is a little-known online letter-sending service, although it has actually been around for many years.
The user must upload their letter to laposte.fr – he can also type it directly online or use one of the many templates for letters of administrative procedures offered free of charge. La Poste then takes care of printing the letter in one of its centers near the recipient to distribute it the next day.
Letters on computer
Simple to use? To see… The mail preparation and ordering steps seem quite intuitive. However, you have to start by finding the service on the La Poste website – too abundant to be clear –: the section “Send mail online”. Sending also requires creating a user account. So many elements that risk putting off users who are not very comfortable with digital. The latter will be able to come and send it to a post office, specifies La Poste. On the other hand, the relay points of La Poste at the merchants will not offer it.
This service is only suitable for letters that are prepared on a computer. Impossible, of course, to send the original of a document or a check to pay an invoice. “What’s the difference with a simple e-mail that we will print as soon as we receive it? », we wonder on the side of the SUD-PTT union.
As for the advantages, on the other hand, greater time flexibility: you have up to 8 p.m. to send the mail for distribution the next day, which is much later than the yellow boxes are collected. La Poste also insists on respecting the confidentiality of mail: “The production line will be highly automated,” specifies a spokeswoman, and the impression will be made “in spaces with secure access and restricted to duly authorized persons”the staff having to take an oath to respect the secrecy of correspondence.
The “red e-letter” will cost a minimum of €1.49 (price up to 6 pages in black and white, add €0.30 for colour), barely more than the red stamp today (1.46 €). For good old paper mail, the standard delivery time will increase to three days at the beginning of 2023, for an unchanged price of €1.16.
