The United States, the Philippines, as well as 15 European countries have decided to ban travel from southern Africa after detection of the Omicron variant. Angola, Mauritius, Rwanda and the Seychelles have interrupted flights from South Africa. Japan, Israel and Morocco have closed their borders to foreigners.
South Africa called for the “immediate and urgent lifting” of travel restrictions against it, supported by the WHO which asks that “The borders remain open”.
Only 23.8% of South Africans are fully vaccinated, more than in the rest of Africa, but much less than the world average (42.7%).
