The #MeToo movement was born in 2007 in the United States to denounce the sexual violence of which women are victims. But it is from the affair of producer Harvey Weinstein (sentenced to twenty-three years in prison in 2020) that the movement will know a worldwide echo. In France, journalist Sandra Muller is launching the French version with the hashtag #BalanceTonPorc. This campaign, which aims to denounce predators, creates tensions among feminists, some criticizing a denouncing mechanism that tends to substitute the media space for that of justice. The cleavage is notably generational. As a result of the #MeToo movement, many groups of young feminists have been created. These stand out from their elders – who aimed for equality with men – by claiming specific rights. Caroline de Haas’ collective #NousToutes or the association Osez le feminisme! (2009) defend the idea that women are inherently discriminated against.
