Christian persecutions in Vietnam in the 18th centurye and XIXe centuries made thousands of martyrs. Among them, Father André Dung-Lac, arrested and beheaded in Hanoi in 1839. One hundred and sixteen of his companions perished between 1745 and 1862. John Paul II canonized them in 1988.
